Dev Anand's "Romancing with Life"

Aruna, my wife, gifted me Dev Anand's autobiography "Romancing with life" for my birthday and it was after almost 10 days of reading that I completed the book yesterday. At the end of it, one can finally conclude that that the great star has only three driving passions in life - Dev Anand, women and Dev Anand. What follows is my opinion on the star as he emerges out of the pages than the book itself. Now, I have always like Dev Anand and his films. They are usually breezy entertainers with right mixes of romance, comedy, mysetry and thrills. Dev equates to what Cary Grant symbolizes in classic Hollywood - debonair, handsome, comic and every girl's dream man. Dev was backed by the talents of his brothers who created scripts that enhanced his image as a star and providing just the right room for Dev Anand the actor and the star to fuse just the right amounts. "Fantoosh", "Taxi driver", "Kaala bazaar", "Nau do gyarah", "Kaala ...

A nastier Me

I find that driving in Bangalore can make you a different man. I am beginning to acquire a Mr Hyde personality when I drive.. and thus not very likable. The prime reason is of course the horribly heavy traffic which cramps so much of your living. And along with that is the bad traffic sense that is common across the country. However, I dont wish to give excuses. I am beginning to dislike myself immensely. I get into fights every now and then, verbal squirmishes.. foul language enters my mouth which I thankfully abstain from uttering generally. Also, I see myself becoming part of the dirt as I abuse and defend myself even when I am in the wrong. I had such a fight yesterday and I felt so terrible after that ! Whats wrong in accepting you are wrong, apologizing and moving on. But no - I fight, receive a few abuses and give some. I resolved not to get into such squabbles yesterday morning.. sigh..  I am trying to consciously control myself.. better myself.. trying to smile more as I drive...

India clinches T20 World cup

In one of the greatest finals of any tournament ever, India beat Pakistan by 5 runs to win the first ever 20-20 cricket world cup. It was a thrilling match where both teams fought nail to tooth and gave not an inch away. Both captains displayed terrific cricket sense and kept their cool till the very end. That India achieved its triumph with a team filled mostly with literal unknown names and an average age of less than 25 augurs very well for the future. Of course, it was not a perfect display by any means. The bowling was obviously weak and there is a heavy dependence on Yuvraj Singh to accelerate in the middle overs. But seeing the enthusiasm and commitment of the team, one can expect that these will be ironed out soon. Full marks to R.P.Singh, Irfan Pathan and Gautam Gambhir in particular who despite being in and out of the team in the past few years rose to the occasion wonderfully. Its celebration time in India. Bangalore erupted to crackers and fireworks yesterday night. Its no...

Life in the Speed Zone in Bangalore

Its been now just over 3 months since we moved back to Bangalore and boy ! has it been blazing away or what. Looking back, life at Hyderabad appears to be much more docile and nicely slow-paced. Bangalore is just too fast a life. Personal obligations have increased multi-fold. Necessity to meet people who come to Bangalore absorb weekends. Friends getting married necessitates a visit to the marriage or reception - in Hyderabad, that was rarer. And the distance to Chennai used to act as a valid excuse for not attending functions. Now, with travel to Chennai so much easier, that excuse sounds lame. Then there is the whole pattern of a day. A typical work day used to start at 10AM and I used to return home by 8 in the night. The morning used to be relaxed and free while the nights used to be longer. I am a morning sleeper - I dont mind just 6 hours of sleep as long as I can sleep till 8.30 or 9. But in Bangalore, I have to be in office by that time ! Why ? Because I need to leave office b...
